Elsey National Park

Approximately a 60 minute drive from The Beagle Motor Inn and you’ll find yourself in the natural beauty of Elsey National Park.  The 13,800 hectare park is home to the Bitter Springs and thermal pools and is also a great spot for bushwalking, fishing, boating and Aboriginal and World War II history.

Mataranka Thermal Pool, known for it’s delightfully warm spring water of around 30 degrees, pumps out 30.5 megaliths of water each day. It’s the perfect spot to relax and take a soothing dip in the therapeutic waters.  If you are looking for a cooler dip, Stevie’s Hole along the Waterhouse River, is not warmed by the springs.

The area was made famous by Jeannie Gunn’s popular novel ‘We of the Never Never’. The park was named after the cattle station in which the book was set and the cinematic adaptation of the book was filmed in nearby Mataranka.

History buffs will enjoy taking a walk around the Old Elsey Cemetery where graves date back to 1926. This is the final resting place of many of the local characters written about in We of the Never Never.

Elsey National Park has facilities including public toilets, picnic area, cafes, scenic lookout, walking tracks, cafe and more. The park is open year round but roads may be closed during the Wet Season. Recommended months to visit are May - September.
